Design thinking for a better future

In 2015, world leaders agreed to 17 goals for a better world by 2030. They are the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

On the weekend of September 21, Australia got involved by joining the global hackathon to design solutions to these 17 goals. I took part in the Sydney event, which was also an opportunity to reunite with some of the crew I studied service design with!

It was a 2-day challenge, with a kickoff party at Academy Xi on Friday night. That’s where we heard more about the problems we’d be working on solutions for, and also where we chose a goal and formed teams. We named ourselves Force for Good, and chose goal #12: responsible consumption and production, with a focus on e-waste reduction.

I've done a lot of hackathon-style events at work before — to solve problems related to company & customer satisfaction goals — but this was my first Design Thinking hackathon. It’s also the first time I’ve applied my skills to a community and environmental cause. It was utterly exhausting, but also one of the most exhilarating projects I've ever worked on. Can’t wait for next year!
